Can someone explain to me how the genetics are working here?
My father and his brothers went bald or lost a lot of hair but their father (my paternal grandfather) didn't. How the fuck does that work? Am I going to go bald?

I'm pretty sure balding is inherited from your mother, so you should look at the men in her family to answer that question.

my dad, my brother, and i all have full heads of hair. dad is 80, brother and i are not young. all the other men on his side of the family back 2 generations went bald early in life. my mom's dad and oldest brother both were balding (they died in their 60s or 70s). her other brother had a full head of hair when he died in his 60s.

I’m bald. My two older brothers are also bald. My dad is bald. His dad is bald. My younger brother is not bald. Mom’s dad is not bald. Myself and my oldest brother look more like dad, my second oldest brother looks more like mom. Younger brother looks more like mom.
I believe it is a complete myth.

Balding is caused by multiple genes but the most common cause is AR gene on X chromosome
So assuming this AR gene is the cause here, your parents probably have chromosomes:
mother - XnbX
father - XbY
(Xb chromosome X balding, Xnb chromosome X without balding, Y chromosome Y)
in these circumstances you can't inherit balding from your father, your father and uncles must have inherited it from their mother
with the AR gene father can never pass the balding to his son, only to his daughter in who it won't be visibly expressed because she has negligible DHT levels
So you have good chance of not going bald, unless your mother's second X is Xb too.
Ofc this is all assuming the cause is the AR gene.

fwiw, going by this logic >>1505496 I take after my moms side of the family looks wise while my brother is the spitting image of my dad and his side of the family

Yes. Of course, hair losing comes from more factors, but at least, in your case, most prob wont be cos of genetic.
