It's certainly less risky to install an open source clone than to download a pirated copy of the original.
I've been using LibreOffice and its predecessor, OpenOffice, for about 20 years, even though I own Office 2013 because I hardly ever boot into Windows anymore (particularly since M$ deliberately broke dual boot with an "update").
