Copying files to usb on linux

I run the latest Debian stable. When I put in a 256 gb usb stick to copy a movie to watch on my tv, it looks like the file is copied fast onto the drive using the console via rysnc or the gui file manager Thunar(XFCE). But whenever I try to eject it reads:
"There is data that needs to be written to the device before it can be removed. Please do not remove media or disconnect the drive."

And when I put the usb flash in my tv often it hasn't fully copied and I need to delete the file and recopy it once or twice for it to truly be one the drive.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Because the progress was only representative of the copy from the original drive to the cache in memory.
In the background, the cache is still being flushed from memory to the USB drive.
USB drives are usually slow, so it can take a while.
You can use the `sync` command to see when it's done (it'll block until the cache is flushed) or use this command to see how much memory still needs to be flushed:
`watch -d grep -e Dirty: -e Writeback: /proc/meminfo`

If you idiotically ignored the warning and pulled the drive before you could eject it, then the transfer from cache to USB drive wasn't done, hence the file was not fully copied.
If it really was done, and you could eject the drive, then you have a fake drive that's not really 256GB.

Linux is notoriously shitty at dealing with removable storage. Run "sudo sync" in a terminal after copying your files, let it do its thing, then once it's done, eject before you remove the drive. Don't remove the drive until it says you're safe to remove it.
The "sync" command forces write caches to be flushed to disk, and running it with sudo performs a sync for all mounted volumes.

The last file I copied was a tiny 1.5 gb file and it took a long while after it pretended it copied it to allow me to eject.

sudo sync seems a better solution, thanks.

But is there any file manager for linux that isn't retarded and doesn't show me a pseudo progress when I am copying to a usb stick and instead tells me the real progress of the real transfer to the external medium?

99% of tech Problem cases its the users fault, if 1,5gb is tiny for you, maybe try cp and sync in console or wait for your PC to tell you when to unmount
