I assume you've already played a multiplayer FPS in your life.
If you mean "retro games", I'd say
1. Super Mario World
2. Mario 64
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Any 1 Pokemon game
5. Any Tekken
6. Any 1 of GTA trilogy
Add any Smash after 64, Mario Kart past GC and Skyrim if you consider them retro.
This is pretty much essential playing for games before/around 2005. If you haven't played those, you just don't have a framework to understand everything else.
Once you're done with that and want to go deeper:
7. Sonic 2
8. DKC2
9. Any PC strategy
10. Half Life 1/2 or other shooters
11. 1 PC adventure game
12. Any console RPG (great entry picks are Earthbound and SM RPG)
Once you're done with those…
13. few NES classics (Mega Man, Contra, etc)
14. Super Metroid
15. RE1,2,4
16. Castlevania SotN or Aria
17. DMC3
18. MGS1-3
19. Fallout 1/2
20. Any good 2D fighter
Word of warning: retro Final Fantasy (and JRPG by extension) can be EXTREMELY hit or miss, you better get ready for cutscenes, dialogue, turn based combat, or else. Do NOT set your expectations high. Same goes for most PS1 games, be prepared for tank controls. Same with NES, don't just rush into hard games then complain about "artificial difficulty".
Lastly, don't force yourself to like games, these are just influential games that were acclaimed on release and nothing else. Also, I heavily recommend to avoid savestates, unless you absolutely can't beat something and you're deep into the game.
