I think if you dont want to mess with software you can find templates for cutting shapes. I think you can find both free and ones that require paying someone for the designs. Etsy has a lot of shape templates for sale.

For fabrics you probably want to check a local fabric store so you can look at the materials in person. Also a good place to pick up tools you may not have. Like sewing thread, scissors, fabric pencils .etc.
