Can someone explain how to tell what type of beat is in a piece of music? For instance I can count out a song being in 6/8 (1,2,3, 1, 2,3 or 1,2,3,4,5,6) but how do you know they're eighth notes and not quarter notes? I count six beats but why is it 6/8 and not 6/4?
