or insert a new line, in which case it will try to set the start and end times so that it starts after the previous one ends and ends before the next one starts and you're going to adjust the times anyway.
But iirc when lines overlap in time in srt the first dialogue appears in the normal spot and the next line appears above it and if a third line comes along it will appear above the second if the first is still around, or below the second if the first one has gone
You're better off
putting in the first subtitle with a blank line added, end it when the second talking should start
The second subtitle that starts when the second line of dialogue starts
It contains the first subtitle text and what was the blank line is replaced with the new dialogue text. End it at the normal for the first dialogue.
Make a third subtitle that starts as soon as the
second one ends, it contains just the second line of dialogue and ends when the second dialogue should end.
You will probably get those highlights saying too many characters for too little time but what happens on screen is that the first dialogue appears by itself just above the bottom of the screen, and then the second dialogue appears just below it, then the first line disappears and the second one stays until its time is up.
Because you make the starting at ending points consecutive they don't flash on screen.
Don't overlap the times or you'll get a worse problem.
But like you've been told, use a better format than srt.
