Fix my PC

If I turn off my pc and attempt to reboot it instantly, my display stays black meaning the GPU wont activate for some reason.
The only way to reboot my pc is to remove the power cable for 5 minutes, wait for some mysterious static electricity to disperse and then turn it on.

I just replaced both the GPU and the PSU. No effect.
What the fuck could it be at this point? BIOS is full of overclocking settings but I've tried like every possible combo.

I did notice that with my other GPU this didnt happen as often, but sometimes it still did.

Are you so sure that it’s your GPU that won’t “activate?” My first suspicion would be that your display is the culprit. I had a display once that had some weird peer saving settings and would have trouble detecting that it was receiving input from a device. Have you tried a different display? That you had this issue with another GPU and also that you have to wait a few minutes for it to start displaying stuff leads to me to suspect the display.

all i can think of:
software related:
bad display drivers;
fast boot or hibernation fucking the system, try disabling them;
your oc settings could also be the culprit, try resetting the bios by reinserting the battery;

hardware related:
pcie slot could have damage or debris;
possible power delivery issues on the mobo (happens when you knock one of the components while taking the gpu out or putting it back in);
the mobo is done for.

How old was the mobo when this started happening? Have you tried clearing CMOS? What about a different BIOS/EFI version? What does the debug display/LEDs/speaker say? If you have an onboard GPU, try that first to see if it improves. Then check if there's a setting that makes the mobo prioritize the discrete GPU. Next there's the various fast POST/boot settings that you should try playing around with. What OS are you running?

My mobo is Asus P6-T Deluxe v2 which is like 17 years old. I've kept it because this is a collectible Alienware pc.

Yes

I think it boots normally, I'm just not seeing anything.

I've tried different OS's and no HDD at all - no difference.

Both. An actual reboot has a better chance to work, though. This could be a clue.

OP here again. I tried 2 different GPU's and found out there's a difference between them

>GTX 1080, 8GB, requires 1 x 8 pin
Problem happens only like once every 20 restarts

>GTX 2080, 1GB, requires 1x8pin + 1x6pin
Problem happens 1-3 times in 3 restarts

could try another psu or open it and see if it has melting plastic or bulging caps.

also have you tried reseating the ram sticks at all?

I have a new PSU and I've reseated the RAMs in a million different configurations already. No effect.

My motherboard has its own power / reset buttons (yeah it's a weird one) and I'll try if using them instead of the case power button changes anything.

if you do that, disconnect the case power and reset switches from the motherboard. it's a shot in the dark but might as well try and see.

dude, the way you tell it, it's not the hdd, ram, or gpu, we're down to the motherboard and psu. unless you have some pc speakers to grab a possible error code from, the psu has to be tested and excluded.

I made yet another observation. Whenever I have a "broken" start, the pc sounds different. Some different fans are running than normal. Also, when I shut down the pc after a broken start, the mouse stays lit up. Forever. Normally it wouldn't get power when the pc is powered off.
This is all power shit, one way or another.

Another observation: I actually dont need to disconnect the power cable to get the pc working again. I just need to wait 5 minutes between shutdown and reboot.

it sounds like the motherboard can't post correctly. there's a failure at some point, to know which step it's failing at, you'll need a pci diagnostics card (or a speaker).
i had a similar problem long ago, and was solved by moving the gpu to another slot. in your case, the gpu with higher power consumption (280) is more problematic, which suggest power delivery issues, either on the motherboard side as a result of small components failing near the pcie area, or the psu itself not being able to provide the necessary power. only way to confirm the latter is either by opening it up and seeing visual damage, or testing the voltages with a multimeter, but it's easier to just try another psu and see.

Just did that, no effect.

I replaced the old 700W with a newer 750W, no change whatsoever, not even in the frequency of the failed boots.

yes due to the last failed post, you're doing more testing so it'll crap out more often.
your last resort is to either live with it, or update the bios firmware and see if that fixes it (small chance).
