>>1529619>A group of anime nerds/friends worked together to create an animated opening video for the DAICON fan convention. Those DAICON III and IV sci-fi fan conventions were actually part of the Nihon SF Taikai (NSFT), Japan’s national science fiction convention. The NSFT has a different name based upon where it is held. When the NSFT event was held in Osaka, it was nicknamed DAICON, which is where the famous Daicon III and IV Opening Animations came from. The creators of the Daicon III and Daicon IV animations later founded GAINAX.
The Nihon SF Taikai still exists today, but the DAICON name is only used when the convention is held in Osaka. The most recent DAICON event was DAICON 7 in 2008. In contrast, the most recent NSFT convention is the upcoming KamaCon which is officially the 63rd Nihon SF Taikai. It takes place at the Japan Engineering College in Kamata, Tokyo, on August 30–31, 2025.
For this event, I sort of think of NSFT as being a SUBSET of KamaCon. KamaCon isn't a particularly wild fan-style science-fiction convention and its topics normally feature a lot "drier" and more serious techical topics applying near-future technical approaches. But I suppose KamaCon would also benefit a lot from having FAR more people attend than normal.
