I just finished watching the Shining for the first time. It was good, but it reminded me of another, similar film I saw when I was a kid, which I assume ripped it off. It's been bugging me what that film could've been

Some clues:
>I saw it on tape when I was in Egypt around the year 2000, so it can't have been any newer than that
>Actors were all western
>Like the Shining, the MC was an alcoholic older white guy
>also like in the shining, a black man wearing a hat is summoned near the end of the movie and is killed iirc

The main difference I can remember was that the lead's alcoholism was more obvious, like the dude was belting back whole bottles of hooch, and it was much less vague that that was causing him to spiral out of control.

I think the black dude was also at some party when he was summoned as opposed to his bedroom and, unlike the Shining's guy, he had specifically offered his help at some point, to whom I forget.

I don't remember seeing any of the other famous scenes from the Shining so I don't think I'm misremembering watching that.
