Read whatever you want, it's not like going into an established game franchise and figuring out which entry to start from, you can read anything you want and it'll be completely self-contained.
If it's due to fear of becoming bored and quitting a large project you have sunk many hours into, I get that, but then why on earth do people recommend fate stay night, when it has both the length of something like umineko and also a ton of boring, pointless SoL scenes that add nothing. A short, plot driven thing like Saya no Uta is the perfect recommendation when you just want to finish something and to be able to explain to your normie friends what a visual novel is.
