I saw a reddit comment saying that androids could blend into society better than robots and 'femoid' was a neutral term that actually highlighted women's ability to mask better than their male 'robot' counterparts. Later the term devolved into a mere insult and I presume the derogatory connotations of the -oid suffix consequently arose.
Dunno though how one would go about verifying this.
