They have a link to an obvious virus or scam and then are spammed with tons of comments that must be by bots. How are these bots getting around the captcha and why are they so common?

It's always the same comments and photos. It obviously is a scam, but I've always wondered what the purpose of the scam is. I've considered clicking the link to see what it is. I'd probably be ok since I run a really obscure GNU/Linux distro. You might consider running Ubuntu in virtualbox and checking it out for yourself.

i wouldn't be surprised if the download page had drive-by downloads, too.

Confirmed Windows adware. I ran it in a windows 8.1 VM. It'll infect your browser with all kinds of pop ups, toolbars, etc.

Not in VM on Ubuntu. I use GNU/Linux because it's more secure, mostly because fewer people use it and nobody makes malware for it.

It happened because updates are a pain in the ass, and I thought that "I use GNU/Linux because it's more secure, mostly because fewer people use it and nobody makes malware for it."

Sounds like a personal problem. I bet that was a decade ago and you were targeted specifically because you tried to play 1337 haxx0r in an IRC. I'm really giving you the benefit of the doubt here because a literal downie could manage security on something like stock Ubuntu well enough not to get pajeetware.

Left it running as a router, some guy in romania botnetted it because it had a vulnerability in the kernel's IP handling, updating meant compiling a new kernel and rebooting, and he was walking the entire IPV4 address space gathering bots.

Nothing has changed in this regard. If you put off updates, this will happen to you too.

Windows 10 is the most secure OS for dumbass end-users, because it prevents them from dumbassing.
