Most people I've talked to who hated nichijou just didnt get the jokes. They think the explosions and shit were the the gags, not realising they were a way to overexaggerate a character's emotions in a whole different gag which worked beautifully. Although I myself admit the first 4-5 episodes were a bit lackluster compared to the rest.
And code geass is an exquisitely done elaborate joke. There has to be a certain mentality to watch it, and your braindead western show watcher who has only watched pretentious but actually retarded western shows doesnt have it.
