Ubuntu cleaning.

Hi /wsr/

So I'm fairly new to linux OS, I'm using Ubuntu and i love it.

The problem is since I've used Windows for ages, i use Ccleaner, and other third-party software to take care of the OS.

Is there a way to actually clean/ taking care of my linux OS the same way i did on Windows.

There really isn't much you need to do. Just learn to manage your packages.

Also take a look at all the services started on boot by systemd, removing unneeded ones can speed up boot quite a bit.

If you need help with a command, type
>man <command>
into a terminal.

Hahahahaha no it doesn't. It's just that it's impossible to defrag it, so this myth is perpetuated so people feel good.

Try running filefrag(1) on your bittorrent downloads directory, and prepare for a shock.

Keep an eye on ~/.thumbnails
I've had it balloon very large and end up slowing other UI-related things as a result. For example I'd hit the volume keys but it would take seconds, sometimes over a minute to register (yet manually adjusting the volume with the taskbar icon or the settings menu worked fine). Deleting the thumbnail folder fixed the issue.

That's also the preferred method for migrating from ext3 to ext4.

You can just bump the version number and mount it ext4, then only new files get stored as extents, and existing files stay stored however they were (usually tens of thousands of fragmented inodes).

EXT4 simply doesn't save files next to each other, fragmentation doesn't start happening in any worthwhile capacity before you fill your drive too much.
Also doesn't filefrag(1) point to a manual page?

On the other hand my debian box has somehow managed to fuck up all of it's drives superblocks...

Simply copying the files to the same drive is enough to defrag an EXT4 filesystem.

If you don't fill the drive up, you can run an EXT4 filesystem for years and years without ever needing to defrag.

The filesystems that you can sort of pay for include NTFS and HFS+. You think those are better?
