i really liked it but it was way too short.

no science fiction tho. I hate science fiction and it's never scary despite how hard it tries.
mystery is fine too. as long as there's horror elements.

Have you played the game? It had multiple endings for each chapter, pretty good especially if you want to try to reach the true ending rather than the anime version.
The sequel game is good too.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Danganronpa is a pretty good mystery game/anime, but not has no elements of horror.
I heard Another was good. I watched one episode, which was very gory.
I couldn't find interest in Elfen Lied after a few episodes, but it might be something you'd like.

haven't played the games, I'm not much of a gamer anymore. but i used to love games like silent hill when I was younger. this anime was very similar in many ways to that. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what i just saw. there were lots of twists and turns which got kinda confusing.

I'll check out your suggestions.

also to specify, the "type" of horror i like is the more creepy kind that sorta messes with your head. like jacob's ladder. not necessarily just gory/slasher.

If you like psychological horror, you should check out Monster.
It has great brooding atmosphere and one of the best villains in film. Can feel slow at times, but it is worth it.

also as a side not, i really love the whole alternate/hell world aspect that you slip into and can't escape, but I think that's too specific to have an actual genre based around it. too niche. corpse party was probably the only anime like that.

Honestly corpse party is pretty shitty with terrible writing and laughable plot.
I recommend not judging other horror shows by how close they get to the first one you watched, but by how good they actually are. You'll get used to different things fairly quickly if you stop searching for an alternative version of your first experience.

yeah the writing wasn't all that great, but i absolutely loved the creepy atmosphere. and the whole haunted/dead dimension they get trapped in. I've always been a fan of that, whether it's jacobs ladder, silent hill, 1408, grave encounters, etc. but like i said, that's a very narrow category and i don't think I'll finally another anime like that.

NAYRT but I'm glad your first response wasn't to defend it, the original Corpse Party PC game was cool but the anime adaption added a bunch of fetishy shit that ruined the horror setting. Not only that, but the anthology was pure cancer.

On the plus side, the addition included more characters and deepened the story more than the original. Blood Drive wasn't nearly as good as Book of Shadows unfortunately.

Another anon here, don't even bother watching the Umineko anime
While Higurashi was a good enough adaptation of the VN, Umineko absolutely ruins everything
If you ever feel like trying Umineko you have to either read the VN or the manga (but you will miss out on the 10/10 OST of the VN)
