Hi. Got a free old TV. Pic related is the back of the TV. Can I connect it to a computer without having to spend a lot of money on a converter? Is there a simple way?

If not what's the best thing I can actually do with this TV. Can I someone watch torrented movies on it at least? Through a DVD player or something I could get cheap second hand?

Sure, if that computer is an Atari ST.

If it's a nice CRT TV, hook it up to a bunch of CRT-era consoles, and enjoy the authentic retro feel.

That computer has HDMI, VGA, and USB outputs, as you probably expect.

Only if the PC has something like a Matrox MGA that can output 480i.

That TV has half the pixel clock of VGA, and can't display the monitor output of any conventional PC made after 1985.

Some PCs have s-video and composite outputs, but these are downscaled for the TV's resolution.

Well since the TV have no YPbPr nor S-video, it is unlikely going to support it. Maybe that SCART connector could.

- S-video can be converted to composite using one single capacitor, which is why $1 s-video/composite dongles exist and get bundled with fucking everything
- composite support is mandatory for SCART, because it's used for sync. S-video is optional, and mostly found in places like Singapore where SCART tvs are likely to get connected to brain-damaged US electronics that can't output RGB

I didn't mention any of this before, because I just assumed you'd know. After all, why would you be giving advice in this thread if you didn't understand the subject matter?

Most 'adapters' on ebay and such does not hook up necessary capacitors/resistors with it, making it useless. Not much point buying those.

what do you mean by "it"? the TV?

so you are arguing that it is impossible to connect a laptop to this old TV? Or that I have to buy an expensive adapter? (Or that I don't have to buy an expensive adapter and get a simple cheap cable)?

That is a relatively new device. The chances of it having options for S-video is very slim. The only way of confirming would be to ask the manufacturer of your model of the laptop. You will highly likely need an converter.

Very likely it can't. But if it's a oldish laptop, it might have an s-video port.

In addition, actual VGA/composite/s-video convertors are available on eBay for $10 or so. Make sure you get one with a VGA *input* and composite *output*: they're not interchangeable, but they look identical apart from a bit of printing on the top.

None of these solutions are going to magically quadruple the monitor's pixel clock or double its vertical resolution, though. It's going to look downscaled to your TV, because it is.

Composite/s-video has ONE CAPACITOR IN IT.

How can you not know this? You're answering questions about SD televisions. How composite and s-video work is surely something everyone qualified to give such advice would just know?

Likewise, how could you muck up composite and YPrPb? The number of signal lines they each have (and what each signal line does!) is literally in their names.

I'd probably install KODI, as its UI is designed for low-resolution screens.

Why would I write that? Because you simply assume all VGA contains S-video which is not true. Look at the pic, OP is running Intel HD Graphics, aka Sandy Bridge and above. There is a fat chance it will support S-video. Whether S-video can adapt to composite is largely irrelevant.

Make sure you get a convertor that's the right way round: they also make ones for connecting VCRs to projectors.

Just don't expect too much. I can't emphasise enough: this is not a monitor, and figuring out a way to connect your PC to it isn't going to make it a become a monitor.

The picture will be not good, and the conversion will look worse than a nativr TV-out, so you should temper your expectations, and use it for stuff that plays to its strengths: old SD TV shows, and retrogaming.
