I personally started out with gundam wing/seed/destiny and liked them a lot, if you like mech's then seed's for the better animation and wing is a somewhat better story.
Stein's gate is very good also, but would not recommend to a beginner.
I couldn't get into Dragonball, hated the extremely slow story progression.
