It's got a whole new cast from the original and is a direct sequel to the events of the first, but you may be able to get away with just knowing what happens in the recap.
I don't suggest watching the original anime. It started off fine, but after episode 4 or 6, it just goes off the rails into original content for no reason and poor choices everywhere. I'm hoping that doesn't happen to Chaos;Child.
Seeing as reading an entire VN is quite an undertaking, you can just skip it if you're not that interested.
If you want another SciAdv anime you can just watch without anything else, go for Steins;Gate. I also loved Robotics;Notes and Occultic;Nine, but others have thought less of them.
Sorry for the essay on Chaos;Child. Hopefully it was helpful though. I also hope you find something worth watching from my list. Definitely check out Anichart, too, though, since I only listed a small portion of stuff from the season and your tastes may be quite different from mine.
