Both Mushishi and Lain are good introductory series. Neither of them really require any knowledge of anime or japanese culture to fully understand or enjoy.

Here's a list of generic titles that are generally liked by non-Anime watchers:

Cowboy Bebop
Studio Ghibli movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa etc)
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

They are what is called entry level because the cultural barrier is lower or non-existent for a lot of them, or they have very high quality for the medium. You don't have to start here, but without any information about what you like or don't like nobody has any idea of what to recommend you.

Im a slice of life/seinenfag so here's a few from me:

Extreme gore:
Berserk
Claymore
Hellsing
Elfen Lied. If you have a fetish for amputated naked girls, this one is for you.
Parasyte -the maxim-.
Afro Samurai. This one is voiced by Samuel L Jackson. If you love him and you love bloody sword fights, you'll love this one. Its also the inspiration behind the video game Furi.

No gore but violent/adult themes:
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Black Lagoon. This one has good english dubs.
Boku dake ga Inai Machi

Slice of life(basically drama with comedy):
Uchuu Kyoudai
Barakamon. Probably my favourite anime of all time, highly recommend this one, and its only 10 episodes or so. Very chill and down to earth and hilarious at the same time. The cool thing about these 2 is that they show the journey and hardships of life of the male protagonist, and you can learn from them too.

Cuteness overload with humor:
Non non biyori
K-on!
