Those shows like SnK picture very nicely a world where humans are forced to work together because they are otherwise on today's menu and the conflict potential that arises from that. It's like with zombie movies, aside from the occasional screamer like scene where a zombie is encountered they mostly function as a device to force a group of completely different characters into one place.
Also it is very stylishly made with the 3D movement gear, just looks cool. You may also like the middle age Europe setting.
