Nanoha is THE mahou shoujo and the best in the genre. Watch the movies, they're remastered in 19:6 with updated visuals so they might suit your taste better.
Cardcaptor Sakura is the second best less shounen-y and more girlish than Nanoha.
If you want some of the new darker ones, try Madoka, YuYuYu, Magical Girl Raising Project and Day Break Illusion.
Also, consider the Symphogear and Precure franchises, both have dedicated fans. Lastly, if you know what Fate is, Prisma Illya is really good.
