What's a good live OS I can use for general diagnostics on a computer?

Back in the day, Hiren's BootCD was the shit. But what is a good modern live boot OS? The more lightweight, the better. Preferably Linux based.

Depends on what you want. If you want it light as fuck, full of tools, and pretty much CLI only, SysRescCD is the ticket.

If you don't need that many tools and would like something more comfortable to use while still having a really light system, Puppy Linux is the right choice.

Huh. Wait. I hadn't used SysRescCD in years, and it looks like it now comes with xfce, so I guess it's pretty simple to use now too.

You want a toolbox or a real system?
Because pretty much EVERY Linux comes as a live- system which you can then install it from, just don't install it and keep it handy on a stick, when you boot from it you have a full blown system ready. Choose a smaller variant like based on XFCE.

I also use hirems and would like a more modern replacement (I also have the hirems win 7 bootcd ), I found Linux live had problems copying data from systems to portable drive

Well I want a "toolbox" but I'm not looking for much. Basically what I want is a USB I can plug into a pc that refuses to boot so I can backup the files it contains. A few tools like chkdsk and what not could come in handy. I'll check out what you suggested.
