360 controllers don't work on laptop

my 360 controllers won't work on my laptop. Controllers aren't broken, and the drivers are fully updated. Running windows 10. They used to work and then they slowly got more stubborn (had to position the cable just right) and now they work almost never.

Are these the controllers that come attached to a cable or the wireless ones that require to be synced using a dongle?

Could be that you fucked up your USB ports. If thats the case your shit out of luck. You would have to take your laptop to get its usb ports repaired. You can tell this is the case if you're able to use the controllers on other computers without issues.

From what I know on windows 10 you're not required to install drivers for Xbox 360 controllers.

other controllers work flawlessly on with the USB ports, my hori pad, my fightstick, just not 360. Only similar issue is if I try to charge my phone through the ports, will stop charging if I mess with the cord too much

I just mentioned that since I would like to rule out this problem being a driver issue.

The only thing I can think of is something causing interference with your ports.

anything in particular you think that may be? I've scoured the internet a million times for this and have never found a resolution. Really don't wanna buy another controller just for same thing to happen

desu I have no clue. Could be that that device gets some sort of power surge through the USB port that only effects devices that have a rechargeable battery.

Probably someone here that knows way more about laptop hardware can figure something out.

Did it still work after you plug a different controller? I had a problem on a different controller that stopped working when I went to charge my phone in the same port. Probably messed the USB voltage. All I had to do was restart my laptop though.

360 controllers need the full 500ma in the USB spec, because they have power-hungry rumble motors in them.

You could try using a powered hub.

It shorted the port and caused it to disable itself. All USB ports have this protection mechanism: it's in the standard. Newer Windowses can reset the port and recover from this without resetting the computer. On older OSes, the port will reset itself when the controller is reset; this happens when the BIOS boots it.
