Alright so I'm really bad with this stuff and don't have a clue on much at all.

I was on an IRC Channel the other day. Someone messaged me a few times asking me where I'm from and acting really weird, like he was just forcing a conversation out of me. It seemed like a bot at first, but he wasn't.
He sent me 2 random links, which were on Youtube and I clicked through both. Shortly after, he quit after some random profanities.

Is there any cause of concern here? Could he have grabbed my IP or anything? Is there a fake Youtube or something of the sort? What could he do with my IP should he now have it?
Any assistance would be good

If the URL was definitely youtube.com, I don't think he could grab your IP. But if it was some kind of hyperlink like

Maybe you see the youtube text and click it, then get bounced through his site before reaching the video. And it's so quick you don't notice. I don't use IRC so I have no idea if this is really possible. However, I found this great page about privacy on IRC:

It's quite possible he could get your IP without even messaging you, if you're in the same room. I can think of a few things he could do with the IP, but they're all unlikely to be effective if he even tried them. Honestly I have gotten random messages or friend requests on Steam, and it's best to just ignore them. Chances are they are just a bored kid fucking around.

Thing is I wasn't really paying attention and opened both links in an incognito tab too, so I've no way of rechecking the link. I do know I copied and pasted the links in, but I can't say for certain there wasn't a URL in there. It doesn't seem possible to reopen the chat on irc either.

What should I do were the link a fishy one? Pay no mind or start looking out for things? If the latter, things like what? Am I at risk?

Also, if it really was as simple as getting someone to click a link, wouldn't we see loads more of this everywhere on the Internet? It seems so easy to exploit

And on top of that, can't most janitors and mods on any website see your IP? That being the case, is it really that dangerous to have it out there?

Unless you upset someone enough to social engineer their way through your ISP lackeys to obtain your personal information you're fine. Only other concerns would be open ports on your router which is unlikely unless you deliberately opened them or being ddosed.

I don't know anything about opening ports but I do know how to check for open ports I think. Which ones should I look out for?
Other than that, it's fine? Do I basically have nothing to worry about? What should make me start worrying?

Maybe. It really depends on what info's out there and what can be gained from it.

Because most people see no value in getting random users' personal information. For instance, in this thread how many people do you want to stalk, dox or otherwise harm via personal info? Hopefully no one. It's rare and generally happens to e-celebs or severe trolls.

Really though, with just my IP it's unlikely he's able to do anything at all that's worth it?
