I have a cold
Spent too long in the rain
Sore throat, light fever, etc
Will a shot of brandy ("cough medicine") do me good, or make it worse?

Won't do anything, neither good or bad. Will just make you feel that burning sensation if you can still taste that and the fake feeling of warmth for a moment and that's it. If you want it go for it.

A cold is a virus, you can't get that by just being in the rain. You likely already had a virus but were coping with it without symptoms. Spending too long in the rain probably lowered your temperature enough to sway the battle in the virus' favor, hence you now have a sore throat.

Brandy; yes take the brandy, it won't do you any harm (or good).

What will make a difference is Vicks First Defence, a nose spray that hinders the virus spreading, and makes you swallow and digest more of it. It's been clinically proven to reduce the duration of a cold, and often stops it at the "I think I'm getting a cold" stage.
