How does Japanese name work ?
I'm trying to name some of my characters.
Does combining the first name and the last name change the meaning ?
I heard they have different meanings.

the meaning can be different even for names that sound the same depending on which kanji they are written with
though if you're asking this you definitely can't read kanji

no those are two separate names
they might mean words that sound funny together though
e.g. you wouldn't name an English character Harry Johnson

This is because of how Kanji work, the Japanese don't just go around combining their first and last name. Here, I'll give an example with the Kanji for water and inside/center/middle.

Alone, this Kanji, 水, means water. Alone, this Kanji, 中, generally means inside or center, or anything synonymous with that. But combined, these Kanji, 水中, form the word "underwater".

As such, they are prone to change meaning when paired with other Kanji.
