Torrent connections and ports

Can someone explain to me the relation between connections and ports ?
My upload speed when measured by speedtest is 1Mbps but my client seldom uploads more than 100Kbps
I have been trying to make my upload faster so I'm learning about port forwarding and all of that jazz, which isn't working all that great.
I've followed /t/'s guide but it never explains how concurrent connections work. If (for example) I set up my client to accept 1000 concurrent connections, do I need 1000 open outgoing ports ? Is one sufficient ? Is there a balance to find ? Is there an optimal number of connections or can I pump it up as much as I want ?

Megabits(Mb) and Megabytes (MB) aren't the same unit of measurement , internet speeds are usually measured in bits, while your torrent client measures your download/upload speed in bytes. 1 Mb per second equals 125KB per second, so that's the most you'll be getting from your connection.

As for the port forwarding, you only need to port forward the port your torrent client uses for incoming connections, for qbittorrent the default port is for example 8999, but your torrent client might use something else, check your settings. Port forwarding won't increase your speeds, but it will ensure that you will be connectable to peers which is important for seeding.

Probably should check if you're measuring megabits or megabytes in both cases, because 1 megabit ~= 0.1 megabyte.

No, because a connection is made up of (source port, source IP/destination port, destination IP), and every client has a unique IP, and will pick a unique port for each connection attempt it makes.

This is obvious if you think about it: Google accepts millions of simultaneous connections, but everyone connects to Google on the same port.

1. More will only confuse the TCP rate control algorithms and should only be done if that's actually your goal (for instance if your ISP is trying to throttle you). The reason BitTorrent makes the Internet shitty for everyone else on the network is that it's only one user, but it acts like a hundred or so, so when the router tries to divide the Internet fairly, it ends up giving it all to one computer running BitTorrent.

You shouldn't be forwarding ports manually anyway: just use UPNP, and your client will ask the router for its own ports, and because the router reports back what the port mapping is, there's no need to use a fixed or named port, the internal port doesn't have to depend on the external port, and if you have two computers running the same software, you don't have to manually configure them to not conflict with each other.

For example, two different computers can both request port 8999, and the router will pull two ports out its ass, forward them to 8999 internally, and everything still works because the router tells the two computers what it did, so they know what port they got on the outside and can tell other peers to use it.

UPNP never seems to work on my router, at least as far as torrent clients go. I'm always unconnectable unless I manually forward the port.

It's not really a masquerade, network speeds have simply always been measured in bits. Also, I have the same upload speed as you and I have no problem maintaining positive ratios on private trackers, just pull out some old laptop/PC(or buy a cheap mini-PC, that's what I did) and have it turned on 24/7 seeding shit. If you really need the higher speeds you could always look into getting a seedbox subscription, the fees are pretty cheap but be mindful you they usually only allow seeding on private trackers.
