I'd rather have a digital chisel. These should have wifi, microphones, speakers and so so on. I'd like to test especially if I the microphone is also capable of recording things outside of ultrasonic range. It could be useful because these or similar models should be in every German household. I would like to know if someone can hack it an spy on me. Or if I can hack it and spy on someone else.

I know that the manufacturer is ISTA but I can't really find a model number anywhere on it. Neither in the manual.

Can't find the network. Everything I see just looks like default FritzBox, Speedport and Asus Network IDs.

And they need wifi so the maintaining company can just drive by your house, send a signal, the speaker inside the detector plays an ultrasonic noise and the microphone picks it up to see if it's still intact and if the air flow through the device is right. And maybe to spy on us?

They don't nessecairly need to use WiFi for this. It could just be a high band RF signal that they use to ping the device. It's similar to what the newer water and gas meters use.

Try to look up the specs of the device and see the actual signal it's emitting. It'll give you a better idea as to how you can wirelessly interface with it.

In that case, you want an SDR dongle and AirSpy (or something similar). I found my electric meter's center frequency as proof-of-concept, but it's spread-spectrum. o_0
