Try any Ghibli film, I know that sounds like an obvious thing but they're genuinely good and will help you think the effort is worth it instead of making you bored and regret it. Then move on to anything by Makoto Shinkai (it's serious scenery porn). If you want a tv show instead of films you should get something light and not too plot heavy to start with, maybe Oreimo (it's only two seasons long). But it's hard to suggest something when we don't know your tastes, you could like CGDCT like K-On! or prefer /ourgirl/ in Watamote, who knows?
Avoid Evangelion or Serial Experiments Lain, leave them for later.
