>it's not like gifs are a good quality optimized compressionexcept they are very much. gif is a lossless format (as long as you keep within the 256 colour palette limit) and the way the compression works you want as many horizontal lines of uniterruped same-colour pixels as possible. and with animations using the frame disposal method combine it gets doubly annoying as a clean background would only have to be once on the initial frame while artefacts are twice on every frame (one cleaning the old position and one putting it into the new position). that makes a substantial difference in terms of file size and in turn how many frames you can fit and how smooth you can make the animation.
