Hey /wsr/, I need help deleting this file.
Whenever i try to rename or edit the folder or the file inside it (there's only one file, its a song file), windows explorer freezes up and I eventually have to restart my computer. I can't delete it, it just freezes up my computer. Anyone know what might be causing this or how I can delete this file?

Knowing jack shit about Windows or filesystems I'd suggest you try doing it from the command line.

Try not to delete system32 while you're at it.

Not necessary. The problem isn't that the file isn't deletable, it's that Explorer is hanging trying to extract metadata from it, so you never get to the point where you can ask it to delete it.

You need to use the command line.
Winkey-R, cmd.exe

A window will pop up, saying
C:\users\your_username\>
That's the equivalent of the address bar in an explorer window.

The way the command-line works is that you write a line of instructions and press enter, then the computer runs them, tells you the result, and then asks you for another.

So what you'll do is change the working directory to wherever the file you're needing to delete is, then delete the file.

To change the working directory, use:
cd ..
>moves up one level
cd \
>moves to the root of the drive
d:
>moves to the d drive
cd system32
>looks for "system32" in the working directory, and if it exists and is a directory, moves down into it
cd \users\administrator
>moves up to the root, then down to users\adminstrator

to delete files, use
del file
>deletes file. Doesn't put it in the recycle bin, doesn't ask if you're sure

If your files or directories have funny names, then you can type part (or none) of the name and then press the tab key. This will cycle through every file that matches what you've typed. Shift-tab goes the other way.

Vista and later changed the way the disk is laid out, but left a load of compatibility junction points so that old programs that weren't aware of this would still work.

This means you can see stuff like "c:\Documents and Settings\", but you can't actually cd into it, because it's just there for backwards compatibility and not a real directory.

So when you're looking for your file, you need to use the real directories introduced in Vista, i.e. c:\users\bob\documents, not c:\users\bob\My Documents\ or c:\Documents and Settings\bob\My Documents\My Music\.

Assuming your music folder is in c: and your username is "Anon". Replace them if needed.

Windows key + R
cmd.exe
cd c:\Users\Anon\Music
del "Various Artists"

You might need to do it after a restart.

Seriously, Linux is one of the best tools for resolving idiotic file issues like this in Windoze, especially since it doesn't give two shits about M$ file permissions.

Well, it's an asset until it rodgers your MFT. Read-only is fine, but there's no way Linux is writing any of my NTFS volumes.

In any case, your solution is inelegant. You should take the time to learn how access control works on the OS you're using, or this situation will just come back again and again and again.
