I'm writing a book. However it involves transportation around the globe stops working.
My first idea is that electricity stops working around the globe.
However there are cars that doesn't need electricity to work. Are they rare ?
If not how can I make my idea possible ?
Physical things disappearing can't be an answer.

Seems like quite a hard scenario to develop without pic-related shenanigans.
Electricity is a physical phenomenon, kind of hard to envision a world where something like that simply stops working.

without the oil, getting the rare materials for those would be near impossible, but you can use it as some weird oasis that actually has power and stuff.

Nuclear power could be part of the oasis, as the nuke plants would also get hit by the EMP

Basically, the EMP's would have fried everything. Stick with the realism that that kinda shit like compressed air cars woudnt work etc.

Well not really. It would have fried everything that happened to be nearby enough, and wasn't in a Faraday cage. In a world where enough of the planet's surface wasn't nuked that people could actually survive the event, enough of enough cars would be fine that you could assemble working cars out of the working parts.

Meaning that most town would be near empty, mass suicides, religion would thrive, and most governments would focus on rebuilding. But with such low populations, people few and far between. The average age of nuclear engineers is around 45 years, and with such a population drop most would die due to lack of healthcare, food, or water. Cars and electricity don't have to vanish, just be very, very rare.

OP what you are asking for is not really realistic unless an apocalypse or aa cataclysmic event happened.

Without fossil fuel, there are literally alternatives people can use. Some cars and some motors/engine can be modified to use steam. Most diesel engines(and other engines) can use wood gas or synthetic fuels. We are not even talking about coal here which are fucking plentiful all over the world.

Of course there will be troubles and hardships but in a few years, people will cope and adapt.

and EMP is not a great crutch. Yes current machines will be fucked but it is mostly dangerous to transformers of our energy grid. Small machinist and companies can make small ones or even make machines again but of course it will take awhile.

The only thing that will work if your location is some third world country that imports a lot of their energy needs but if it's the whole planet, then it's impossible.

What I am saying here is you shun some facts to fit the narrative/story you want to peddle.

I'll add more to that emp part. Like I said, without a cataclysmic event, global stoppage of our current transportation is almost impossible. Solar flares can fit does not work when you consider the fact that we can see them know and know when they will hit. Mad doctrine means an apocalypse so it's not only transportation that's fucked.

And something more to add. Most of the western world literally have old trains in storage. Some of third world still use them. They run on steam and coal. They don't need electricity.

A really simple engine that can be used to run a makeshift car or a factory can be created in a garage with primitive tools and know-how.

Diesels don't necessarily need those electrically driven. Everything can be mechanical or chemical energy based. Large diesels have been started with gunpowder cartridges (coffman cartridges and alike) and flywheel starters.

I have started a sailboat auxiliary engine (7hp BMW/Hatz diesel) with a crank handle and assisting decompression device.

Here's the idea that will fit what you want. Nanomachines/modified bacteria that eat silicon. Most if not all electronics use it. They don't even need to last. Just eat enough and they will kill an electronic device. Like a nanomachine/modified bacteria with a killtimer.

And to answer this, manual transmission cars can be push-started. Manual trans cars are getting rarer in new cars but they are not still not that rare.

Yeah, but they're not going to be, because anyone that's interested can just go to a car park, find 2-3 of the same car, and swap the non-crunchy bits into one of them. Ideally they'd pick a diesel, because diesel can be refreshed simply by running it through a coffee filter, or very fine sand. Massive population loss acts in your favour, because that means more working cars per person, and more diesel per person. Expect to see diesel widely traded, because it can run generators for electricity (which any muppet can repair simply by finding some working copper wire and re-winding the field coils), and can be burned in your stove for heating.

They'd have to be magical, because silicon (like water) is already "eaten". What we call "silicon" is actually silicon dioxide, i.e. sand. You can't oxidise sand, because it's already oxidised silicon.

Also they'd have to know how to eat silicon chips, but not eat the Earth all the way down to its iron core.

Like you said, silicon dioxide is what commonly exist in nature. Nanomachines or bacteria can be modified to only eat a certain variety of silicon.

But "electricity stops working" is a bit silly and fantastical anyways. It's a fundamental physical force that's also in charge of holding all your atoms together. If it stopped you would briefly be a big cloud of ions as all the electrons flew off into space, and then you would probably become a black hole with no electromagnetism around to keep your atoms far enough apart.

No not really, they're just old early/pre 70's for the most part. Maybe anything before 1968, and you would have a vehicle that wouldn't need electricity to function at all.

Fuel pump doesn't need to be electrical, you can use a carburator instead of injjector rails, and diesels use a magneto.

I would pick up the bacteria as the main cause of the cataclysm. Bacteria are already a kind of natural nanomachine system. They have been proposed for waste disposal also.

Add up in the plot GMO development gone awol, destroying selected plant based oil and alcohol production for fuel purposes.

Nations will be suddenly interested in thorium lifter reactors for power.

Other very possible development for power production IRL would be IR and NIR "solar" cells. Those would pick up infrared and near-infrared spectrum. It means that you would be able to harvest heat radiation for power production. Those cells would work at night, mid winter, under a cloudy sky. They would also recycle any process heat radiation back into electrical power. These types of cells are currently under intensive scientific research IRL.
