Reformat a Hard Drive

I bought a new motherboard, and I need to know how to reformat a hard drive. I'm in the process of upgrading windows to 10 and all that, but I'm lost as to what reformatting actually means, why I have to do it, and whether im supposed to do on the new hardware or on my current PC.

if you absolutely have to scrub the drive because you bought it from a sleazy guy in an alleyway, there'll be an option to format it when you're installing.

what it means... it's like a new drive is an empty field, and formatting ploughs furrows into the field where you can .. er.. plant .. your files.

Thanks, but this is a drive that I already own running windows 8.1. I was told by the lady at microcenter I had to reformat because of a new harddrive. Do I do this on the old or new PC?

I built a new PC, im just moving my hard drive and graphics card over because I didnt wnna drop money on new ones for those and didnt need to upgrade them. She sold me every new part, and had a good look at the PC is was replacing including my grpahics card and hard drive.

I've found that the average non-tech person who hears about formatting may not realize that it means deleting your shit. All of it. Pictures, games, programs, everything.

I understand that it'll delete my shit. I have nothing valuable that isnt backed up. I'm stuck on the install though. almost an jhour of "getting things ready". I closed it and restarted to try to see if it just got stuck

incidentally, i bought a new 8TB drive today, and began a full format.

two hours later, at 33%, i ditched it and quick-formatted it.
