So, i'm trying to find animé with an intellectual bent; one that explores intellectual/academic/philosophicaltopics as a running theme. Do any of you have any suggestions? I found Serial Experiments Lain which maybe promising, or not... Thanks!!!

The late 90s is filled with weird and experimental stuff like that thanks to Evangelion. My personal favorite is Revolutionary Girl Utena, which starts off a little slow but quickly becomes a really fascinating and challenging viewing experience. If you like Utena I would highly recommend watching Kill la Kill as well, which is heavily inspired by it and it's just as thematically dense.

If you're feeling literary, I recommend Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. It's based on the book and it has good graphics. Steins;gate is pretty smart too.
