I posted this on /a/ a couple minutes ago but didn't realise that recs went here, so I'll copypaste here!
Despite knowing all sorts of shit about anime, I haven't actually watched many.
I've watched:
Evangelion (I really enjoyed it)
Akira
GitS 1 and 2
Ghost Stories (For the memey american voiceover)
Gundam Thunderbolt - December Sky
Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Xabungle
and I'm part way through watching Serial Experiments Lain because I enjoyed Evangelion so much that I thought I'd seek out Anno's other "similar" works.
I enjoyed the intense character exploration and general sense of hopelessness that I got from Eva, and I liked the hilariously over the top war-crime simulator that was Gundam Thunderbolt, and the setting and atmosphere of Akira and GitS (along with GitS' philosophical aspect). Jin Roh was interesting but, having not read the manga, I feel I was likely missing out on a much bigger story.
Has anyone got recommendations for films or series that might appeal to me based on my previously-watched list?
