The only reason Japan does support them, is, because they really don't like there being a foreign, underground distribution channel for their media.
Anime production companies usually PAY for their broadcast spots on TV. That's why anime run past midnight. They make a loss at the distribution step.
If you watch illegal (fan)subs and afterwards buy merch, discs and source material, you are supporting the anime industry more than any CR subscriber could ever hope to.
The downside is obviously that it's illegal and that Japan hates you for doing it, but there isn't even any actual damage in what you do.
