OP, what do you mean by episodic? Non-movie? Or no overarching plot? Because no-plot and tragic do not go well together.

I know this is a no brainer but I'd suggest revisiting 5cm/s. Still does the job for me. Or go for its manga, excellent art, gives sufficient time to each character unlike in the film.

/wsr/ is definitely not an /a/, however I think you should watch more and not just stick with one type of tear jerker. You will run out of those.

My gateway proposition would be Natsume Yuujinchou. A lot to watch. Won't make you cry either, most likely.

If you want utterly tragic, everything goes to shit and you and the MC both want to kill yourself because the world is fucked then Texhnolyze is worth a look, just dont look forward to being happy at any point during it. Boredom is also possible, especially until Yoshi starts kicking up shit in the city.
Narutaru will likewise make you question how some people can be so fucked up.

It used to be when Clannad was airing everyone recommended Kanon in the same breath, seems to have dropped off the radar but take a look.

Kaiba looks like 'if Dr. Seuss made an anime' but its got a couple good sad moments.

I know plenty of stuff with sad/bittersweet endings or sad moments in the middle of them (pic mostly related) though that's probably not what you are looking for sinceit's not the focus of the show
