Where can I get JUST subtitle files, not a full video + subtitles, for anime? Is there such a place?

If it's softsubbed you can just increase the size in vsfilter.

Subs are embedded into the video and are .ass. Don't know if that's preferable but it's given me a real hassle

I found it because there was a thread some days ago with someone searching subs only as well.
Apparently, animetosho.org has subs only as a download option. So next time, look there, I guess.
