How safe and useful is this?

If you use proper proxies / VPNs it should be fine, but keep in mind that anything that is free will likely send your message with tons of "SEND BY FREE SMS DOTCUM SEND YOUR FREE SMS VIA US!" and shit like that.
If you don't want that, you can purchase a burner telephone and register it with fake data. (some countries even still sell burner phones that don't require registration)
