I'm just a 24yo brainlet. I never took any lit-related classes in undergrad, and anything remotely /lit/ material wasn't older than a few decades.

I actually visited Italy (Pompei, Rome) and Vatican City after high school grad, back when I was still interested in anthropology (first year in uni changed that). I might come again in the future.

I recommend the translation of Anthony Esolen, the books contain the orignal italian text and the translation, as well as extensive notes (which you will need) and the illustrations from Gustave Dore.

Robert Hollander transcription is the way to go.

Honestly forget any random Italian script scrambled in the text because you are unable to read it.

You need to learn Italian to understand it.
In the case of Dante, you need to be beyond native.
