Avoid boards like /b/, /pol/, /v/, and /a/ if you know you can't really tolerate toxicity.
If you like literature or technology you're in luck because those boards are good. As are the majority of anime/Japanese boards.
As for fitting in, just lurkmoar. Adopt speaking habits of other posters- or don't. Nobody really cares, but don't fall for bait and stuff.
