I used paint.net with an "isolate lineart" plugin, so isolating black on white background takes a single click and even preserves transparency.

you can do this with gimp 2.10 using color to alpha utility, if you feel like using free software

You could use the magic wand in photoshop, though results may vary.
In paint.net you can use the paint bucket for it, with opacity set to 0 and blending to overwrite. Then you can click on anything you don't want to see and adjust the tolerance for optimal results. A layer for contrast below is useful to see if you got any ugly borders. Pic related.
