If you get a modem only (not a gateway, those are modem/router combos) you will still need a router to go with it. Get a T-Mobile Personal Cellspot (actually just a rebranded Asus AC-68U) for cheap and flash it back into a $150 AC-68U for free:

It may still be registered to someone else and that person will have to call and ask for it to be removed before your ISP will let you use it, meaning you're stuck with a brick. I know Cuckcast does this.
