Install a copy of Ubuntu in a VirtualBox virtual machine and install VLC. If the unlikely scenario happens and someone hacks you then all they're getting out of it are the files found within an out-of-the-box Ubuntu distribution.

my ubuntu VM has a weird up setup (10.10.x.x) private ip versus my regular pc having a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx ip so when i go to port forward to my vm it doesntwork

Link for 18.10 Ubuntu. Just change everything that is the 10.x.x.x to the 192.x.x.x subnet might also be different but just copy it from your router or pc.
