In terms of geography, it's just a large island (image somewhat related).
In terms of civilization it's really up to you. You can go for small homogeneous communities like the natives people have already mentioned. Or you can have complex civilizations in constant state of war (both Japan and Maya/Aztec somewhat fit the bill, although Japan certainly had outside knowledge of the greater China region).
As to reasons for isolation: Either make it physical (as in certain currents or magical walls or wind directions actually prevent them from escaping their continent) or cultural (they have a religious taboo about venturing on the water, or they have legends about horrific monsters or something). The more advanced the civilization is, the less likely they wouldn't have tried to become sea faring.
Just think of it as a very small world and do your normal world building. There's nothing special about small continents.
