Azumanga Daiou and Nichijou are good, too, but they're more comedy-focused. The episodes that let you get to know the characters more are what made me love both anime, though.
I also recommend The Cat Returns. It's a movie, but it's one of my all-time favorite movies just because of how happy and fun it is.
