>>768150bandwith costs quite a bit, and some of the groups single episodes being 1gb, self served on 100mb-1000mb second connections getting downloaded 1000's to 10000's times adds up, its been a long time but the numbers bots were asking for usually lined up with costs to operate + upgrade and maintenance costs, I never really ran into purely for profit bots, because if they aren't actively used, no one will donate, and if they dont provide something useful, they wont be used, along with the shit is easy enough to set up yourself, if someone is being a cunt they can just replace you.
>>768162I don't know about that, but when I mean gatekeeping, I mean 'Oh you haven't used irc before, well fuck off, ban' rather then 'oh, you don't use irc, let me tell you how this works'
I also mean some groups when I was active would use !releases as the way to tell you what to get, but some groups also made that a word that instantly bans you. some you needed to say !bots but others that would instantly ban you a few would have any words said in irc besides correctly spelt commands and release number would be banned,
Shit is fucking annoying to navigate, but then things moved to torrents and the use of irc outside of dvd/bluray encodes of older things died down significantly. hell manga side died altogether when got lurk went away.
