some people recommend the TV series first but the events in the movies are what started the other events in the series, meaning they happened first. If you watch the tv series first (like I did) they reference the events in the movies a lot so you'll be clueless on what they're talking about. the movies are pretty much standalone and they don't spoil other stuff like the tv series spoil the movies.

but if you watch bakemonogatari first a lot of times you won't understand what exactly they are talking about. that's why I recommend the movies first, I just think is a better experience.
