Hi, I have to write a 1000 word essay on climate change and stuff. It could be about anything so I was thinking of writing it about the economical reasons behind it and why it's actually about money. Does anyone have any good sources on this? All I can find on it is websites that scream about that its a conspiracy theory with no scientific or logical reasoning behind it.

Feeling pretty inspirationless.

Economically speaking it's the "tragedy of the commons". Costs that a single actor causes are externalized onto the public. If clean air is a common good and pollution doesn't cost anything - society as a whole has a massive interest in clean air, but any single actor has no incentive to stop polluting. It's a supranational/international problem, since pollution doesn't stop at the border. So if your country has strict rules and your neighbour does not, it's pointless. Not only will the stacks from 10 miles across the boarder spew pollution into your country, all your producing industry that doesn't want to shoulder the massive investments to clean up their emissions in accordance with your laws will move too. And that creats a sort of political prisoner's dilemma. Any single country has a huge incentive to not regulate pollution, even though everyone would be better off with uniformly stricter rules.

And we need rules. Part of the tragedy of the commons is that it's a well-reasearched area where markets fail. Basic supply and demand is way to price sensitive to ever promote clean manufacturing without government regulation. But market liberalism has a powerful lobby so a common compromise is emission trading. If you want to pollute you need to buy certificates. If you clean up your act, you can sell your certificates. Interesting idea, but basically every economist agrees that these carbon emission certificates are currently priced way too cheaply to properly incentivise.

A case can be made for just going "fuck it", entirely deregulating, and spending the savings on costal defenses.

Holland is already below sea level, but don't tell the people that live there.

But of course, the data on the distant past of the planet is not as accurate as modern ones, so we could theoretically skip some short-term temperature jumps. However, at least for the last half a million years, nothing like this has happened, and there is no reason to believe that such leaps have occurred before.
